America's most wanted deadbeat dad is heading to jail and will have to fork over hundreds of thousands of dollars in restitution. The courts look upon child support in Massachusetts as in other states, as mandatory for the welfare of the children in question. This particular 65-year-old man was allegedly running from child support payments since 1998. He was found and arrested in Canada.
He was ordered to pay more than $533,000 in restitution. The accused and his wife got a divorce in the late 80s. Their four children were in the care of his former wife, but he was initially ordered to pay $100 a month in child support which was lowered to $14 a month after the man claimed he was disabled and unemployed.
That order still stood when authorities found out the man's bank account became rather healthy after he sold an internet business for $2 million. His child support payments were again modified, keeping in line with his income that apparently went unreported. He was deported from Canada for violating immigration policy.
The best interests of children always come first in child custody and child support matters. The are many legalities that go hand in hand with child support issues. A Massachusetts attorney can clarify the law's complexities and help a client explore options for legal recourse. A person who is owed child support payments may be able to file a contempt action against the one who owes that support. A lawyer aware of the many factors that affect child support payments can help with the filing.
