Man arrested for failure to pay child support since 1998

Divorce has become a fairly common occurrence across the nation. Couples with children work out new routines, and many parents have no problems making child support payments. However, as some Massachusetts residents may know, there are a few parents who will go to extraordinary lengths to avoid making child support payments.

One man went so far as to flee the country in order to avoid paying child support. He and his wife divorced in 1989, and he was ordered to pay child support. However, instead of making the payments, he sold an internet business and eventually fled the country. Federal courts filed an indictment nine years later in 1998 for his failure to pay child support.

What some may not know is that there is a government website that has a list titled "wanted deadbeats" that gives a description of the individual as well as other details. This website was ultimately the reason for this man's arrest and return to the United States. A Canadian restaurant owner saw the website and reported the man's whereabouts to the authorities. It has been nearly 20 years since this man has made a child support payment, and he is estimated to be more than $500,000 in arrears.

Thankfully, there is only a small percentage of people willing to travel to another country in order to avoid paying child support. There are many parents who make an effort to make their payments on time, and some even go above and beyond what is legally expected of them. However, those Massachusetts residents who have difficulty collecting support payments could benefit from speaking with an attorney. Parents who are having difficulty making these payments could also benefit from speaking with an attorney.
