Discussing high asset divorce with your partner

It may surprise many Massachusetts residents that January is a popular month for couples to file for divorce. It seems to be popular because the holidays are over and most family obligations have been met. However, broaching the subject of divorce can be difficult or awkward. Couples who suspect that their divorce will be classified as a high asset divorce may have even more difficulty discussing it with their spouse.

Spouses who wish to discuss the possibility of divorce may wish to be prepared for a variety of reactions. Some may react with surprise, anger, sadness or even relief. If the spouse is concerned with finances, property division or child custody, then some of these reactions may be amplified. In some cases, a spouse may try to plead with his or her spouse in hopes of changing the spouse's mind.

There are times where couples will stay together or at least postpone their plans to divorce. Some may choose to stay together for the sake of their children. Others may postpone filing for divorce until after they have had a chance to discuss their problems with their spouse. For some, the desire for divorce may fade.

Massachusetts residents who feel as though divorce is their best option could benefit from seeking the advice of a local attorney. Lawyers can help couples to communicate effectively throughout the divorce process. In a high asset divorce, attorneys may also be able to help their clients to decide how best to divide certain assets, like financial accounts or physical property.
