Reasons the divorce process may drag on

When someone finally decides to file for divorce, they often hope that the process will be very quick. No one wants to drag out the process. Unfortunately that is not always the outcome. In many cases, a divorce may be slowed by a number of different reasons, not to mention any wait period that may be required by state law.

The divorce may be slowed down if there is a lot of paperwork that needs to be collected. This is especially true if the other party refuses to hand over certain paperwork that your attorney is requesting. In that case your attorney may need to ask the court to compel the other party to disclose information. While this type of hearing may seem simple, it can drag out the divorce if the divorce court system is handling many cases. The hearing may be scheduled weeks or even months out.

When those financial documents finally make it into the hands of your attorney, there may be a lot of sorting to do. If there are a lot of assets to consider, your attorney may work alongside a financial expert in order to make sure no stone goes unturned. This deeper investigation into the financial state of your ex may take some time as well.

Although divorce may take time, it is an important process that shouldn’t be rushed. The outcome of the legal process will have a great impact on your financial future. The hope is that the time invested in taking the correct legal steps will positively impact your future.
