A proactive child custody arrangement can help divorced parents

A divorce can be an emotional ordeal. Couples that have gone through this process may want nothing more than to avoid prolonged contact with each other. Yet when children are involved, a joint child custody arrangement may defeat that wish.

Yet co-parenting does not have to be exhausting. With the help of a proactive divorce and child custody attorney, a parent going through a divorce may be able to anticipate some common pitfalls. For example, by establishing a communication procedure for last-minute scheduling conflicts, parents won’t be caught off guard.

Such a procedure can be articulated during divorce negotiations, and possibly included in the parenting time agreement that the parties will submit for the court’s approval. One strategy might be to reduce any disagreements or problem areas to writing, possibly for submission to a neutral third party. In fact, an attorney might even serve as an appointed co-parenting coordinator for resolving such last-minute conflicts.

If a joint parenting arrangement is to work, parents must remember to keep their kids’ needs at the forefront. For example, each parent may have different parenting styles. However, badmouthing a former spouse in front of the kids won’t likely accomplish any changes, and may cause emotional distress to children.

An attorney that focuses on divorce and child custody may have strategies to suggest for devising an approach to parenting time that minimizes conflict. Children don’t want to see their parents fight, regardless of their divorced status. Given the time constraints of work, many parents may need to rely on their former spouse for assistance, both financially and in terms of physical parenting time.
