Wife of Smallville's Superman is requesting alimony in divorce

Although couples decide to get married for various reasons, one common reason is to spend the rest of their life with their partner. On the other hand, even if the couple can get through difficult times with one another, married couples in Massachusetts understand that there comes a time when divorce is the best option for them. The decision to dissolve a marriage is often a very difficult one to make, but the divorce process is often filled with numerous factors to consider and decisions to make. This is especially true in a celebrity or high-asset divorce where there is a laundry list of marital assets and even spousal support to consider.

In celebrity news, it was recently reported that Tom Welling and his wife of ten years have decided to call it quits. According to sources, the couple claimed the split was due to irreconcilable differences. The actor who plays Superman in the TV show Smallville and his soon-to-be ex-wife have no children, so child custody and child support will not be issues in their dissolution. But his wife is reportedly asking for spousal support.

When alimony is put on the table, various factors should be considered. If a prenuptial or postnuptial agreement were instruments of the marriage, this will often help determine if alimony is possible. If spousal support was included, it will also dictate how long and how much it will be.

If these documents were not a part of the marriage, the length of the marriage and martial contributions will determine whether it is possible and how long the payments will go on. Courts will often look toward evidence indicating whether a spouse was a homemaker or made sacrifices to help further their spouse's career at the expense of their own. Furthermore, alimony will help keep the spouses at the same standard of living they were accustomed to during the marriage.

When one party to the divorce requests alimony, courts must sort through various factors. Splitting couples should understand their rights and options, especially when it concerns their future finances.
