When a couple goes through a divorce, alimony may be settled upon during mediation process or ordered by a judge. Oftentimes this agreement seeks to compensate a spouse for the economic sacrifices they made have made by forgoing a career in order to raise children or keep a household. Consequently, these individual often come to rely on these payments while they seek to regain their financial independence. For this reason, alimony settlements are a strict legal obligation, and failing to pay them can have significant legal consequences.
Richard Morgan Fliehr, whom Bay Staters may know better by his professional wrestling stage-name 'Ric Flair,' is currently facing legal trouble related to his alimony agreement. A judge in his home-state of North Carolina has recently issued an arrest warrant for the former wrestler on the grounds that Fliehr has failed to pay his wife approximately $32 thousand in spousal support money.
According to the terms of their agreement, Fleihr was obligated to pay his wife $4,000 a month in spousal support. In a statement regarding the missing payments, Fliehr said that he has failed to make the payments because of a series of unfortunate events which beset him, including the death of his son and a lengthy hospital stay for a blood clot.
If Fliehr can make the payments he owes, he may be able to avoid any significant legal consequences. However, he is fails to make the payments he could face punishment, even including time in jail.
It is important to note that alimony agreements can be altered given changing financial circumstances. Should Fliehr be incapable of sustaining the $4,000 a month alimony payments because of changes in his finances, he may be able to alter the agreement. This could potentially lead to a lessened likelihood of missing future payments.
