Putin's bill bans American parents from adopting Russian children

Many Massachusetts parents have probably eagerly awaited the arrival of a child. This waiting may take place during pregnancy or during the adoption process. For parents who are adopting, the period of time spent waiting for the adoption to be finalized is likely quite nerve-wracking.

Many American couples in the process of adopting children from Russia were probably very disappointed to hear that Russia's President Vladimir Putin signed a bill today that bans Americans from adopting Russian children.

The bill was allegedly created in retaliation to a recent American bill which "imposes U.S. travel and financial restrictions on human rights abusers in Russia." Regardless of the reason for the bill, this Russian bill significantly changes American-Russian adoption practices. American parents have adopted thousands of children from Russia in recent years.

This ban will considerably change the plans of American families hoping to adopt children from Russia. It is unclear whether families whose adoptions of Russian children are already approved will be able to continue with the adoption process.

Families who have already met the child they were supposed to adopt and planned extensively for the arrival of the child will likely experience extreme pain as a result of this ban. When a couple decides to adopt a child internationally, they likely realize the challenges facing them. This type of ban adds an unforeseen challenge to the adoption process, though.

Since adoptions can be quite complicated, completing the adoption process with the help of a legal professional will most likely be very beneficial. Families who were in the process of adopting children from Russia are now in an even more complicated situation which may also warrant legal guidance.
