During divorce, don't forget about your health

Going through a breakup is always difficult, no matter how necessary it may be. And working through every detail of a divorce can be a major stressor that lasts for months or more. Although finalizing your divorce will allow you to move on financially, the stress of divorce can take an emotional and physical toll. Focusing on your own well-being during the process can keep you healthy both physically and mentally.

Of course one of the best ways to reduce stress and stay healthy is to exercise. Regular exercise, whether you go to a spin class, practice yoga or take a walk around the block, can help stave off depression and anxiety and help you sleep better. To keep up with a routine, find a friend to exercise with or stick to activities you enjoy.

Next, be proactive in understanding your health risks and how to prevent them. Studies have shown that divorce can increase the risk of certain health conditions in some people. Talk to your doctor about what you could be at risk for and what you can do now to protect yourself. If you feel depressed or anxious because of your divorce, speaking to a therapist may be helpful.

Finally, allow yourself to relax when you need it. Stress can lead to health problems that will only create more stress. Finding something that helps you relax, whether it is joining a yoga group or getting regular massages, can help you stay grounded and keep your immune system healthy.

Of course, these are not the only ways to stay healthy during divorce. Having a support group of friends and family you trust, maintaining a regular schedule and simply getting some sunlight once in a while can also help make the divorce process a little easier.
