'Orange is the New Black' star seeks to block ex from alimony

A person's life and career could cause their relationship to become public interest. This is very true for public figures in Massachusetts or celebrities across the nation who are dating, married or going through relationship problems. When a wealthy or celebrity couple seeks to dissolve their marriage, many wonder if alimony will be a part of the divorce settlement. The divorce process and disputes about alimony can create a complicated situation.

It was recently reported that Pablo Schreiber, a star from the well-known television series "Orange is the New Black," had separation papers filed against him. In response to his estranged wife filing for legal separation, Schreiber decided to skip the intermediary step and just file for divorce.

Along with this response, the actor who plays a corrupt corrections officer on the show, also seeks specifics when it comes to alimony and child custody. After his soon-to-be ex-wife asked for full custody of the couples two children, a five- year old and a two-year-old, Schreiber decided to return fire on those requests.

Pablo asked the court to block his estranged wife from spousal support while also asking the court to grant joint custody of their two children. No decisions have been made at this time and it is not clear if the couple will seek any alternative approaches such as a collaborative method or mediation, although a court could be the best route to settle these disputes because they do not see eye-to-eye.

When a couple is struggling with divorce issues such as alimony, it is important to consider a few factors. When it is evident that a spouse has been reliant on their ex's income, a court might acknowledge that the spouse is entitled to some sort of alimony whether it is short term or long term. Another factor to consider is whether a spouse quit their job in order to care for the children. Rehabilitative alimony could help them re-enter the work world or complete their education.

No matter what type of alimony arrangements a divorcing couple is seeking or trying to prevent, there are various steps that each spouse could take to help determine a fair settlement and payment plan. Massachusetts residents who are struggling with the divorce process and establishing a spousal support plan should understand they have options. Seeking guidance about their courses of action could help them reach a compromise and a final agreement.
