Alimony not part of divorce agreement for Kutcher and Moore

During the dissolution of a marriage, divorcing couples in Massachusetts need to consider various factors. In most cases, the separating spouses think about their future and how they will carryon after the split. Depending on their roles in the marriage, a spouse might request or qualify for alimony. Alimony, also called spousal support, might not only be necessary but could be considered crucial for a spouse to maintain their lifestyle after the end of the marriage.

When the famous or the wealthy divorce, the media and public eye often keep close tabs on their dissolution. Whether the dissolution is messy and filled with disputes or is finalized amicably, the public is often curious about who gets what. For example, the recent divorce of Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore had the public waiting to hear the news about their divorce agreement.

Back in March when they first filed for divorce, it was reported that Moore was asking the court to grant her financial support. Some controversy began over this because Moore was listed as a top-earning woman in Hollywood during the 1990s and they questioned her need for spousal support. For the past two years, 35-year-old Kutcher has been the highest paid television actor for his role on the sitcom "Two and a Half Men."

Kutcher makes as estimated $24 million a year, and after the couple cited irreconcilable differences after their eight-year marriage, Moore sought to receive a portion of his earnings. The two finalized their divorce recently but alimony was not part of their agreement. The two agreed not to include spousal support in their divorce agreement, but that was the only details of their divorce reported at this time.

Spousal support can be a very important component in a divorce agreement and might be necessary for an ex-spouse to maintain their lifestyle post-divorce. Those seeking alimony should understand that the length of their marriage as well as their role in the marriage would help determine the amount of alimony they can receive and the duration of spousal support payments. Those seeking to obtain alimony should seek advice about their situation in order to protect their rights and interests.
