Putin's bill bans American parents from adopting Russian children

Many Massachusetts parents have probably eagerly awaited the arrival of a child. This waiting may take place during pregnancy or during the adoption process. For parents who are adopting, the period of time spent waiting for the adoption to be finalized is likely quite nerve-wracking.

A same-sex married couple's pursuit of citizenship

For many couples, getting married is pretty simple. However, other couples experience all sorts of obstacles in the process of legally committing to each other. Same-sex couples, in particular, face legal difficulties when marrying. While Massachusetts same-sex couples can marry, these couples may still encounter difficulties with federal laws.

Working through post-divorce finances

Discussions regarding property division will most likely come up during a divorce. In addition to separating physical possessions, couples will also probably talk about separating their finances. Since most married couples combine their finances, a divorce can have a significant impact on the financial security of both spouses.

Earlier paternity testing could impact child custody decisions

For many years, an expecting mother who was unsure about the identity of her baby's father had only a few choices to confirm the father's identity. She could wait until after the child's birth and have DNA tests done or have amniocentesis done during pregnancy and determine the paternity through this potentially risky procedure.

Who will run the family business after a divorce?

For many divorced couples, their children keep them in contact with each other for potentially years after the divorce is finalized. Managing child custody arrangements and child support agreements can be trying, especially when the relationship between the adults has dissolved.

Over-the-phone marriage is official according to court

Weddings can take a variety of forms; some are intimate, whereas others have hundreds of guests. Massachusetts residents have probably attended many types of weddings. Though more rare, some weddings even occur over the telephone. This method of entering a marriage may not be very common, but a Maryland court ruled recently that it is just as valid as an in-person ceremony.

Poor communication led to Dennis Rodman's child support mishap

Stories of unpaid child support are fairly common. Many times when a parent has failed to pay child support, it is because he or she does not have the money or actively avoids making the payments. However, NBA superstar Dennis Rodman's unpaid child support case appears to be different.

Supreme Court could make major gay marriage ruling soon

The Defense of Marriage Act has been in place since 1996. DOMA made it clear that in the eyes of the federal government, a marriage is only between a man and a woman. However, many changes have occurred in terms of gay marriage rights since then. Many Massachusetts same-sex couples have benefitted from the state's legalization of gay marriage.
